Couple of weeks ago (right when the controversy about Seksualiti Merdeka started), me and Jun Kit were the benefactors of two VIP tickets to see Faye Wong in concert at Bukit Jalil.

Sitting beside Jun Kit and screaming like love-struck dreamers throughout the night is one of the huge memories of 2011. Faye is truly one of a kind - her crowd banter was a grand total of FOUR ‘thank yous’ - three times in mandarin and once in Cantonese. Yes, I counted. Who else gets away with that?!! And still leaves you breathless at the end of the night?

It made me realize that you can totally stick to who you are, and still make magic. Trust what you’re doing, dig deep and follow that path to the fucking end of the rainbow.

OH GOD!!

At one point, she was in a harness which started to move to the center of the room. I looked at Jun Kit and shouted: Jun Kit, she’s coming. She’s coming to us! It was crazy. It was cathartic.

One of the last songs had these twirling red fabric swirls. They looked like whirling dervishes, or strange jellyfish. Faye… stood there and sang.

The end was the biggest mind fuck of all. She just disappeared. No ‘good bye’, no ‘thank you, Malaysia’. Nothing. Then this huge fucking mirror appears on stage, reflecting the lights in the foreground, blinding the audience for an instant.

Then it was over. The lights came on, and the whole stadium were face to face with themselves in this huge mirror. It was like waking up from a dream.

Jun Kit is one of the best photographers I know. He has a great eye and the soul of an artist. You can’t buy, learn or kill that shit. It just is. I wish he would make a film.
