There is a kingdom

So by now you’ve probably heard about the ban on Seksualiti Merdeka festival. There’s been fuck loads of media noise surrounding it, which is great and necessary, but I think it’s reached that saturation point where the sheer load of information + comments + rants + rage + passion can drive people nuts and make them tune out.

A friend posted this update today which pretty much sums it up:

I am all into Social Media and all of this shit; but I think we have spent too much time here. The controversy and noise against Seksualiti Merdeka have been amplified to a dizzying noise due to the close nature of the media. I beg everyone to dislodge for a few hours and breath real air. HUGS.. you will feel better.

A-fucking-men. Which is why I hesitated before hitting the publish button on the posters in support of Seksualiti Merdeka. I’ve begun to think of my own media output in terms of carbon credits - am I neutral, positive, or just sucking up valuable lifeforce with digital fart?

But I think these posters open up space, as well as fill it…  

I’ve been working on them since the news of the ban broke last week. I started by asking friends what made them really happy, the idea being that if these instruments of happiness were in a loving relationship, the happiness would amplify itself into infinity. It was also a way of subverting the idea of who can love what. Zedeck wrote some amazing ‘Letters to the Editor’ for each image (Grace wrote one too when she stayed over), and Rahmat translated them perfectly into BM.

We’re collecting signatures for each poster, and we’ll send them with their statements to the real newspapers. This is an experiment in bridging social and mainstream media, seeing whether we can subversively use both to bring out different ways of thinking and talking about issues.
