Apa Benda Ni? | About Us

Lot 1699, Taman Toh Kee Kah, Port Dickson is a single-storey, four-room bungalow built in the post-Merdeka modernist style — proof of a bygone, less cynical era. It sports a large, unmanageable garden with (among others):

  • a jackfruit tree;
  • a mango tree;
  • a coconut tree;
  • a durian tree; and
  • a rambutan tree.

Some of these don’t fruit any more.

Lot 1699 neighbours SMK Datuk Haji Abdul Samad (a secondary school whose students have stone-throwing, rambutan-stealing tendencies). It isn’t by the sea, unfortunately; instead, it’s got a stunning view of the nearby Shell Refinery’s petrol flare.

Formerly the Siew family home, Lot 1699 is currently serving as a base for the prosaic misadventures of Sharon Chin and Zedeck Siew.

Sharon Chin is a visual artist. Makes things, writes things and puts things + people together. Exhibited locally and internationally. Co-founder and Managing Editor of Arteri, a website about arts and culture in Malaysia and South East Asia.

Moved to Port Dickson to escape chronic project fatigue, and to work on art that will be the next big exhibition. And play her ukulele.

Zedeck Siew is a writer. He used to do journalism about art, culture and politics, working for Kakiseni (when it used to be an arts and culture journal), The Nut Graph (when it had a full-time newsroom), KLue (when it was a monthly lifestyle magazine), and Poskod Malaysia.

Now he’s a bum. And trying to write a book (collection of short fiction) before the end of 2011. Boleh ke? Tak tau lah.

We got tired/bored/scared of the bustle, traffic and muchness of Kuala Lumpur; this is our break from the big city. If you need a break, too, why not come over for a weekend?
